What do you know about addiction?

The addiction is not an illness. It’s not a physical, organic thing. The addiction is a consequence of learned experience and repetitions of patterns. Is alcoholism in the genes?

The answer is no.

In the science of epigenetics it’s been found that it’s the perception of your environment that controls your genes. You’re not a victim of your genes because you’re the one who can change your environment—or, more importantly, change your perception of your environment—and thus change your response to it.

Below is a Ted Talk spoken by Johann Hari, titled “Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong?”

  1. This is the truth of my own experience. This truth is out there now, and supported by enough science and credentialed experts to support the position. To beat it, to beat anything, we need to learn EXACTLY what it is we’re fighting. Unconscious motivations (for me, toxic shame) fuels the addiction fire. “Why The Addiction? No. Why The Pain.” ~ Dr. Gabor Mate (paraphrased).

Addiction-Is Addiction-Is Addiction. We can hide it behind the socially acceptable ones (Power; Dominance; Drama; Food; Shopping). Behaviorally and Psychologically, and what’s happening in the brain-exactly the same.

  2. Johann Hari’s research is in alignment with your own; the power of community, bonding and environment. People who feel isolated or in a state of protection are more vulnerable to addiction. When he says that when people feel they have something to get out of bed for in the morning & have rediscovered purpose, they’re back in a state of growth. And then they bond with their community & they’re in a different environment. I hope the rest of the world can learn from Portugal. A war against anything doesn’t bring peace. 🙂 H.
